As part of the “Strengthening Community Resilience and Protection of Human Rights in Sinjar and West Nineveh” project, Youth Bridge Organization conducted multiple awareness sessions for youth in Sinjar and Til-Qasab in collaboration with the Sinjar Community Police Department. These sessions aimed to address the growing challenges of internet misuse and the increasingly alarming issue of cyber extortion, particularly its impact on young people, with young females being disproportionately targeted.
The sessions focused on educating youth about the dangers associated with improper use of social media platforms, such as online blackmail, identity theft, and exposure to harmful content. Participants were provided with practical guidance on recognizing the warning signs of cyber extortion and understanding the tactics commonly used by perpetrators. The workshops emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information, securing social media accounts, and practicing digital hygiene, such as using strong passwords and avoiding sharing sensitive material online.
In addition to technical advice, the sessions also explored the psychological and social implications of cyber extortion, empowering young people to seek help when faced with such threats. Youth Bridge Organization facilitated open discussions where participants could share their experiences, ask questions, and engage in dialogue with community police representatives, fostering trust and collaboration between the community and local law enforcement.
This initiative reflects Youth Bridge Organization’s commitment to addressing contemporary challenges in the digital age while fostering a culture of safety, awareness, and resilience among youth in Sinjar and Til-Qasab. It also highlights the importance of community collaboration in combating cyber extortion and ensuring a safer environment for all.
